The Editor's Choice for July - Dramaphile
by Dream_wia_dream

The selection of Dramaphile as this month's Miss July, erm Editor's Choice was an easy one. She's a great writer & entertaining to boot. She writes just about any pairing, but her Marauders just blow me away. She writes humor into everything, and does a brilliant job of it. I have chosen Canine Sensibilities to feature this month. Because it is a wonderful look at the Marauder dynamic. And it has nothing to do with the fact that a drunk Sirius is hotter than Jiffy Pop. Nope, nothing at all.

  1. How did you get involved with writing fan fiction?
My best friend introduced me to fanfic when I was fifteen, and I was hooked. I first started reading and writing in the X-Files fandom. My first stories were really cheesy PG-rated fluff fics, and some crackfic, and I didn't post them on the internet for about six months, until I got the courage to put them up on fanfiction.net, back when it was still free of most Mary Sues. I look back at them now and cringe, because they're so bad they're funny! I wrote my first slash fic when I discovered Harry Potter fic, about a year and a half ago, because another good friend introduced me and got me hooked.

  2. What story was the most fun to write? Which was the most challenging and why?
It's hard to choose the most fun! The crackfic, probably, like my entry for the MILF ficfest, Here's to You, Mrs. Robinson, where Blaise's mum violates poor gay Draco. I think I laughed all through writing that! The hardest by far would be New Moon, which took me months to write, because it was AU and my first time ever writing Snape, and I just couldn't get it right for the longest time. I'm probably the most proud of that fic, because I worked so hard on it!

  3. Who is your favorite Harry Potter character and why?
Sirius, of course! I'm so in love with that man. He completely fascinates me, because he's this fully grown man who got stuck in the process of maturing, so as an adult, he's still got the sensibilities of the man he was before all hell broke loose. And I love being able to play around with his canine traits, something I strongly identify with him. He's smart, he's loyal, he's energetic and easily-distracted by shiny things, he's not afraid to bark in the face of danger or oppression, and he's terribly impulsive. Plus, he's totally hot according to canon.

  4. Where are you from and tell us something interesting about where you live?
I'm from San Diego, California,, in what amounts to the exact definition to Suburbia. A little known fact is that San Diego has quite possibly the best fast food in the country. Really, you people are missing out. Oh, and the weather really is a good as they say.

  5. What advice would you give other writers?
Write write write write write. I've been writing fic for close to seven years, and I didn't start at nearly the same level as I am now. Hell, I feel like I've improved over the last year, simply from writing so much. I think it's also important, especially if long stories intimidate you, to start small and write a lot of drabbles and ficlets and prompts, and then go from there. For some people (definitely not me!), writing a 50,000 word fic is a good start, but I've found that learning to write in little bits helps so much in cleaning up your words and teaching you to keep your stories to the point.

  6. What is your favorite food and would which famous person (non-HP) would you most like to share it with?
I have such a weakness for Ben & Jerry's Phish Food ice cream, which is sinfully good and full of little fudge fishies. I would share my pint with Heath Ledger, so long as he doesn't mind eating it off of me.

  7. If you were trapped in a cupboard with a Harry Potter character who would it be and what pick up line would you use on them?
Sirius, of course! And James, while I'm at it. I'm such a cheater, aren't I? I'd ask if they'd ever had a threesome before…

  8. Which is your favorite Harry Potter book?
Order of the Phoenix, because even though they kill off Sirius, you really get a lot of insight into his character. That book was where I really fell in love with him.

  9. Do you think we're completely mental?
Haha, not at all! Ed Note: Really, we think she's lying. This may be because we all think we're completely mental.

  10. What was the most shocking moment of the HP series?
Definitely the part in HBP where Harry uses sectumsempra on Draco. It was such a horrifying thing to read, and so tense, especially after a scene where you really get to see Draco's vulnerability. I was in complete shock, because even though the book was darker than the others, that was by far the scariest scene I'd read so far, even more than anyone who died in any of the last three books.

  11. If you could ask JKR one thing what would it be?
When are you going to admit that Sirius and Remus are Harry's closeted gay uncles already???

  12. Who is your role model?
That's a tough one! I would say Diane Fosse, because she was so brave to take on this crazy assignment to go study gorillas in the wild when almost no one had studied them before, and she had so much heart and conviction for what she believed in. I hope to be that brave someday to stand up for what I believe in.

  13. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
None, because really who wants to chuck wood, anyway?

  14. What three things would you take with you to a deserted island?
Chocolate, something to write with/on, and Johnny Depp.

  15. Which HP character would do the best on Survivor and why?
Lucius Malfoy, because he's so good at schmoozing and making deals and kissing arse. He's the sort who would make friends with everyone and then slit their throats at tribal council one by one before anyone figured him out.

  16. What is the defining moment in the characterization of your favorite character?
Sirius's argument with Molly at the beginning of OotP when he fights for Harry's right to know what's going on with Voldemort and the Order. He's so fiercely and blindly loyal to Harry, and you really see some of the fire inside him in that scene, something that doesn't get to come out much in the rest of the book because he's so upset about being cooped up in his parents' home. I think that scene's also such a good representation of why he and Remus are such good friends. Remus is very much the balance to him, and he's one of the few people who really takes him seriously and doesn't discount everything he says as if he were a kid.

  17. What inspires you to write?
Anything and everything. Sometimes it's just a thought, or a word or a song. Sometimes I just get a line in my head and I have to see where it goes, or a piece of dialogue, or a description. A few times, I've heard an unusual pairing and starts thinking about how I could make it work, and it becomes a story. Occasionally I've drawn from personal experience or preference, and sometimes I just want to write something that I think is hot, so I start with a kink or a pairing and I just go with it.

  18. If you could choose Harry's fate what would it be?
To live happily ever after with the man of his choice gracing his bed. No, really, I want Harry to survive, and Hermione and Ron, and I want them to all have a chance to start over and learn how to be themselves once everything is over. And maybe find some love along the way as well.

  19. Which character is the hardest for you to write?
Snape, by far! I'm really picky about how I like Snape in the stories I read, and even more picky when it comes to my writing. I've only written him a couple of times, and it's really hard to get him to sound right in my head. His voice just doesn't seem to be there for me. I wrote angsty teenage Snape once, it intrigued me, so maybe I'll try writing him that way and see what happens.

  20. Give us your epitaph.
Karyn was the first ever person to be a successful professional gay porn writer/professor of monkey studies. She is survived by her loving children and grandchildren, and her 21 year old Brazilian boytoy, Rafael.

  21. What kind of environment do you like to write in? Quiet? Loud?
Quiet, definitely. I can't write when there is music, or when people are talking, unless I'm in class. I write very well during lectures, for some reason, or while watching tv, Go figure. I actually do a lot of talking out scenes when I'm alone in the car, or writing in my head while I'm out walking, and then I try to scribble down as much as I can remember when I get to a pen and paper or a computer. There's something about the mindless movement and the lack of distraction that really gets me focused and creative.

  22. When writing do you have any tried and true tricks that you use to tempt your muse?
Drabbling works brilliantly for me in a lot of cases. If I feel stuck, I try to write in short spurts, and get my ideas out, or take prompts and write them, just to keep in the game. I also find that talking out the story with someone helps, even if they're just listening. It has to come from inside my head, but it's not always organized until I can really talk it out.

  23. If you were a character in the Harry Potter books who would you be and why?
Um… James, because he's such a fun and mischievous guy, and that would mean I would be able to hang out with Sirius all the time and molest him when he's not looking

  24. Will you be my monkey??
Hee hee. Of course! *jumps on you and grooms your head*

  25. Do you want to ask The Captains any questions? Go ahead…we'll all tell the truth. Honestly.
If you were a part of Harry's body, what part would you be and why?
After much discussion, and giggling (and warnings from Annie to keep the interview as PG-13 as possible), the Captains and Captains-in-Training came up with these answers:
Annie: His lips becuase he's obviously kissing Ron's....lips! yes lips!
Simons Flower: His hands. *wicked grin* I forgot to say why, didn't I? Does the "*wicked grin*" explain it all? If not, then "His hands because then I could touch everything -- all of Harry and all of anyone he chooses to touch" okay?
Madam Minnie: Do you really want me to answer this honestly? Because it would be well beyond the NC-17 rating! LOL But... to stay G-rated, I'll say his eyes... to look longingly into Ron's. *sigh* hehehehehe
Dream wia Dream: His What? I can't say that. OK, fine. I will choose to be his ears. So I could be nibbled on and feel all shivery as Ron, no wait Sirius, hmmm maybe Remus, or oooh, Draco...well, while ANY of them nuzzled and whispered dirty things at me.
SeSptwd: Hmm... I'd be his mouth, so I could taste Draco... and Ron. *wink*
