Q:  Is Membership open to anyone?
A:  Membership is open to anyone 13 years or older.

Q:  Do I have to register?
A:  Registration is not necessary.  However, registration brings certain perks.  If you are a registered member, you can save a list of favorite stories, authors or series.  You also must be a registered member (and over 18) to read the stories in The Broomshed (our age restricted section).  At the moment, separate registration is required for the Main Fiction Site, The Forums and Quidditch Trading Cards, our art gallery.

Q:  Why can't I read a story?
A:  To be able to read the stories in the Broomshed (our age restricted section), you must register and select Yes on the age verification statement (if you are of age to read adult content).
To do this you must select "YES" for the age verification statement on the Edit Preferences section of Account Info.

Q:  Are there rules and regulations for usage of the site?
A:  Yes, we have a standard set of rules for both members and authors on the site.  Our Submission Guidelines and Terms of Service can be found here.  If you have any questions or concerns about these rules, please contact The Captains

Q:  What if I don't like a story?
A:  Whether you like or dislike a story, it is important to be courteous of the author.  If you would like to discuss a story, you should leave a review for the author.  Please do not flame the authors.  Intentional flaming is grounds for banning from the site.  The Golden Rule applies here – Treat others as you'd like to be treated.

Q:  How do I contact an author directly?
A:  Authors can be contacted using the "Contact Author" form.  Click on the Author's name if you are viewing a story to go to the Author's Profile.  Click the [Contact] link to get in touch with the Author.  You can also find Author information by Searching by Penname or Story Title.  If you have problems contacting an Author, please contact The Captains to assist.

Q:  Do you accept Affiliates?
A:  The Quidditch Pitch currently has affiliations with over 20 different Harry Potter related websites.  Take a look at our affiliate page to explore new sites.  If you would like to become an Affiliate of The Quidditch Pitch, please contact The Captains.

Q:  Do you need help?
A:  Some people think that we all need mental help, but that's beside the point.  The Quidditch Pitch currently has a variety of positions open.  Take a look at our Application Page for opportunities.  We are always on the lookout for fresh meat talent, so apply today!

Q:  How did the Quidditch Pitch get started?
A:  The Quidditch Pitch was conceived as an all-pairing, all-pairing Harry Potter fanfiction site.  We launched on October 31, 2005 with about 30 authors and 40 members.  The site has grown tremendously in the two years since launch.  We've added additional sites, many members and nearly 300 authors since then.  The Captains are dedicated to bringing together a community of Harry Potter fans through fiction, contests, podcasts, art galleries and discussions about the world of J.K. Rowling.

Q:  Can I suggest a new category or suggest characters?
A:  If you find a character lacking or would like to suggest a new category, feel free to contact The Captains.

Q:  Can I link to stories hosted by you?
A:  You can link to any story hosted on our site.  However, please remember that to view RT rated stories on the site, the reader must be registered.

Q:  What are the submission and archiving guidelines?
A:  We have a comprehensive list of guidelines for story acceptance in our Submissions Guidelines.  Because we try to provide our readers with quality stories at The Quidditch Pitch, we have a strict acceptance process.  All stories are reviewed and must be beta read before they are posted on the site.  If you have any questions or concerns about archiving on the site, please contact The Captains.

Q:  What formats are accepted for story submission?
A:  The Story section on the submission form allows you to enter stories in several ways.
  • HTML – If you are comfortable with html coding, you can use the html button to either code directly or copy and paste HTML code into the field.
  • Rich Text – the Story box is also a Rich Text Editor.  You can paste text into the box, then use the rich text tools below the box to format your story as you would in a word processor.
  • Copy and paste already formatted text – If you already have your story formatted and posted, you can copy the formatted story and paste directly into the Story box.  This will correctly post about 95% of all formatting.
If you ever have problems submitting or formatting a story, please contact The Captains.

Q:  Can I use Word and convert to HTML file that way?
A:  The Microsoft Word "Save as HTML" function usually provides unexpected results.  We recommend that if you use Word, you just copy and paste directly from the document into the Story field on the Story Submission form rather than upload the Word as HTML.

Q:  How should I rate my story?
A:  Use your best judgment.  The Quidditch Pitch breaks down stories into 5 levels of ratings using the following guidelines:
  • GP - General Public - Stories suitable for anyone.
  • FG - Family Guidance - Stories suitable with parental consent.
  • FG-13 - Family Guidance-13 - Stories suitable for those 13 years or older.
  • MT - Mature Themes - Stories suitable for those 16 or older.
  • RT - Restricted Themes - Suitable for at least age 17 or the legal age of consent in your country.

Q:  Who owns the stories posted here?
A:  Authors own the stories they post.  The Quidditch Pitch holds no ownership, nor responsibility, for the fiction posted on this archive.  The Captains will occasionally recommend stories posted on The Quidditch Pitch to outside affiliates or sites.

Q:  What do I do if I spot someone plagiarizing stories or a find a work that is plagiarized?
A:  The Quidditch Pitch does not tolerate plagiarism in any form.  If you find an example of yours or another's work being plagiarized, please contact The Captains immediately.

Q:  What do I do if I get an rude review/flame?
A:  Authors may delete any reviews they don't want associated with their story.  However, The Captains take any rudeness seriously as flaming is grounds for banning on all sites.  If you encounter a rude individual/comment on any of your stories, series or contact comments, please forward any information to The Captains and we will take it from there.

Q:  What constitutes a rude review or flame?
A:  In general to "flame" someone is to viciously insult them or their work in a manner that has little or no redeeming value.  We consider insulting the author, the story, or the pairing to be a flame.  Constructive feedback is not considered flaming.  However, if you ever feel uncomfortable with reviews or contact left by a member, please contact The Captains.

Q:  How do I get a beta?
A:  The Quidditch Pitch has a robust staff of betas (Quidditch Assistants).  All stories by unvalidated authors must be betaed before they are posted.  When you submit a story to the site, our team of Coordinators will place your story in the Beta Queue to start the beta process.

Q:  How can I become a Quidditch Assistant?
A:  Please fill out the Beta Application.  You will receive beta tests to complete after we process your application.  If you have any questions, please contact The Captains.

Q:  How do I add a favorite story or author?
A:  When you click on [Add Author to Favorites] or [Add Story to Favorites], you'll be taken to a second page where you can leave a comment for the Author/Story you are favoriting.  You have the option to leave a comment or not, then press "Submit" at the bottom of the page.  After you hit Submit, you should be given a screen that says something like "the action was successful, click here to return to Your Account".

Q:  How do I select a Category during Story Submission?
A:  On the story submission page, the Main Categories are listed first.  When you select a main Category, the list will repopulate with the Sub-Category choices.  Choose one or more Sub-Categories from the list and click the right arrow to add them to the list.  Step-by-step, visual instructions can be found here.  Please note that any RT-rated stories will be removed from Bad Moon Rising, Hallowed Halls, Remains of the Day, or Dark Tales.  All RT-rated stories must be in The Broomshed.

Q:  How do I know which Category to choose?
A:  Our Category Guide is here.  In general, our categories are broken down according where they may fall in the Harry Potter time line.  Sub-Categories are divided into the type of story.  If you are ever unsure where to list your story, let us know.

Q:  How will I know if my story is rejected or accepted?
A:  After you submit your story, you should receive an email within three days from one of our Quidditch Coordinators on the acceptance or rejection of your story.  If you don't receive an email, please contact The Captains for more information.

Q:  Why was my story rejected?
A:  There are a variety of reasons a story is rejected.  The most common is violations of our Submission Guidelines and Terms of Service.  Additionally, while The Quidditch Pitch understands that quality is subjective, we do try to maintain a quality archive and reject those fics we feel don't fit into our library.  These fics are reviewed by at least six people before rejection, all of whom have different taste.  If you still feel like your fic should be part of The Quidditch Pitch, please contact The Captains to discuss the issue.

Q:  I submitted a story more than three days ago and I haven't heard anything.
A:  There are times during which our staff is unavailable.  At these times, processing our submission queue and beta queue will be delayed.  If ever you have a question about a submission, please contact The Captains.

Q:  How are stories accepted?
A:  Our Quidditch Coordinators or Captains review the submitted stories daily.  Drabbles (fics 100-500 words) without spelling or formatting errors are generally accepted and posted as-is.  Anything longer than a drabble (500+ words) by unvalidated authors are generally accepted if they meet our Submission Guidelines and are free of any major formatting errors.  At this point, the story is accepted and you will receive an acceptance letter.

Q:  How long after I submit will my story be posted?
A:  Please allow up to three days for acceptance or rejection of your story.  Stories subject to our beta process will be put into the queue after acceptance.  Please allow a few days for a beta to contact you and start the process.  Depending upon the length of the story (or chapter) and the needed edits, the beta process can take up to a week.

Q:  I received an email saying my story was accepted.  What do I do now?
A:  Upon acceptance, your fic will be placed in our beta queue.  Within a few days, you should receive a letter from a beta (Quidditch Assistant) to introduce themselves and let you know they will be handling your fic.  Every fic takes a different length of time for beta, but generally one to two weeks is our goal.  At that point, your beta will return the edited fic to you for review.  After reviewing the suggested edits, you may then return the fic to your beta for upload or resubmit with a statement in the notes about your TQP beta and that it is a reviewed resubmission.

Q:  What do the different Genres mean?
A:  Please see our genre list for definitions and examples.

Q:  What do the different Warnings mean?
A:  Please see our warnings list for definitions and examples.

Q:  What other sites are a part of The Quidditch Pitch?
A:  In addition to our our main fiction site, we have forums for a variety of discussion, and Quidditch Trading Cards, our art gallery.  We also have a presence on Live Journal and Insane Journal.
Our podcast, Quaffle Talk, has its own journal on Live Journal, Insane Journal and MySpace.

Q:  I still have questions!
A:  Contact The Captains.
